Islam's features

Introduction

The world is not only densely populated but it is also saturated with different religions in various concepts. Everyone claims that he has a message to rescue the world and that he is the only one who is on the right path - each one asserting as if everybody owns the franchise to the truth!

Faced with such a fact, it is imperative upon us, as Muslims, to know the features of our religion. This is for us to determine our position, as well as, to properly conduct and guard ourselves against the other ones that may either be of divine roots such as Christianity and Judaism or of human origin like Buddhism and Hinduism. Otherwise, we will succumb to a plethora of religions.

Islam has specific features, which distinguishes it among the rest. By understanding these features, we will hopefully realize its merits and Allaah’s (God’s) kindness as He guides and immerses us towards Islam. Here are some of these features:

1.     Islam is a divine religion

Allaah Says (what means): " And indeed, (O Muhammad), you receive the Quran from one Wise and Knowing." [Quran: 27:6] "Alif - Lam - Meem. (This is) the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds." [Quran: 32:1-2].

So Islam, by this feature, is essentially distinguished from the other laws and ideologies whose source is the human mind as opposed to Islam’s which is divine ("Godly"). This great difference should not be ignored nor taken for granted.

While Islam is considered a divine revelation, it should be:

A. Perfect and devoid of insufficiency, ignorance and caprice because it comes from Allaah the Almighty, Whose perfection is complete and Who is infallible. Therefore, if the effect of Allaah’s perfection is shown in His revealed commands, they should also be perfect.

B. Suitable, convenient and sufficient. This revelation is from the Creator Who knows what may benefit or harm His creatures. Allaah Says (what means): "Does He Who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?" [Quran: 67:14].

C. Highly respected and dignified by believers regardless of one’s social status and earthly power because such positions and influence cannot take them away from the submission to Almighty Allaah.

This holds true to a president or a ruler who is not obliged to follow any philosopher’s or intellectual’s opinion but still has to submit to Almighty Allaah, regardless of his position, as all other creatures submit to Him.

For instance, Muslims who used to drink wine before Islam gave up their habit when Islam had forbidden it. In contrast, the United States in CE 1930 spent a lot of money advertising the dangers of wine and even applied hard punishment along the line in order to put a stop to it but still all their efforts failed.

2.     Islam is comprehensive

Islam unlike human principles and ordered set of ideas is a comprehensive system for all life affairs and human behaviour, as each aspect caters to its own field. So there are no spaces in human life which are apart from his religion and belief.

Muslims cannot do anything without a jurisprudent ruling either by obligation, prohibition, legalisation, recommendation or abhorrence. Therefore, everything in a Muslim’s life submits to and are gauged against these five jurisprudentially rulings, such that whatever comes to one ‘s mind always has a jurisprudential verdict in Islam.

The comprehensiveness of this religious jurisprudential ruling is clear because:

A. Islam includes the Jurisprudence of belief, such as faith in Allaah and faith in the Last Day and Judgement.

B. It includes the Jurisprudence of morality, such as honesty and forbidden lie.

C. It includes the jurisprudential ruling of man’s relationship with his Lord, such as prayer and fasting.

D. It includes the regulations of man’s relationship with each other, such as the jurisprudential ruling of the family including the manner of dealing with them.

The effect of this comprehensiveness is reflected in a Muslim’s life because he is always in touch with Allaah in all his undertakings. He is connected with Allaah in his worship, his relationship with others and his children, his eating, his companionship with his wife, his livelihood and many others of such respect, affirming that this religion concludes and evaluates all these things.

3.     It is general

Another one of Islam’s excellent aspects is its generality or applicability to all human beings. It was not sent solely to a specific group or special race. Almighty Allaah Says (what means): "And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind as a bringer of good tidings and a warner…" [Quran: 34:28]. "Say, (O Muhammad), 'O mankind! Indeed I am the Messenger of Allaah to you all…'" [Quran: 7:158]

Its suitability at any given time and place is permanent and unchangeable. Unlike the previous divine laws that catered only to a specific period and to a specific group or race.

One might ask: "Why is it that divine laws were not continued in its revelation till the Day of Judgment?"

The answer is that the revelation of these divine laws is not a kind of futility but rather wisdom in order to complete a previous divine law or to meet a specific need for a given specific group. However, Almighty Allaah has sent completely and perfectly the Islamic message when the sequence and series of divine messages already nurtured the human beings. Such an Islamic message filled the gaps and completed the previous revelations as well as confirmed the virtues inherent of the previous divine messages. Almighty Allaah has provided Islamic messages with continuous characteristics and fulfillment of human needs till the Day of Judgment, demonstrating in effect one of Almighty Allaah’s wisdoms.

The Almighty Allaah Says (what means): "This day I have perfected for you your religion, and completed My favour upon you, and have approved for you Islam as religion." [Quran: 5:3]

4.     Islam sets up rewards as well as punishment for our deeds.

The jurisprudential rulings of Islam are not just abstract pieces of advice or instructions that have no bearing for reward or punishment. On the contrary, it offers good reward for the obedient ones and punishment for the transgressors and violators of its law. Moreover, there are inherent degrees of reward and punishment in it. It is common knowledge that the punishment and rewards are meted out in the Last Day of Judgement but in some cases, the earthly penalty shares in the Day of Judgement’s penalty by applying punishment to the people who violate the jurisprudential rulings of Islam in such cases as murder, theft and adultery.

This special feature of punishment and reward for deeds obliges Muslims to submit willfully, whether in secret or open, to the jurisprudential rulings of Islam. Muslims obey this for fear of Almighty Allaah’s punishment because even if one could escape from his sins in this life, the reality that everyone will be brought before Allaah on the Day of Judgement for a fair and decent trial will always hold true in the end.

Therefore, Muslims avoid the forbidden deeds not only because of respect to and shame from Allaah, but also out of fear for Allaah’s punishment on the Day of Judgement. Allaah Says (what means): " The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present (before it) and what it has done of evil, it will wish between itself and that (evil) was a great distance…" [Quran: 3:30].

So Muslims may escape from people that they have wronged while in this life, but they will always be held accountable for it causing them to fear Allaah’s punishment on the Day of Judgement.

Reflective of this is the story of Maa'iz who committed adultery and then went to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) proclaiming he had committed adultery finally asking for purification.

5.     It is ideal and practical

Islam hones and gears people for perfection, granting their needs, not ignoring them. This Islamic feature promotes mankind with due consciousness of his nature, reality, interest and desire.

In general, there is moderation more than exaggeration or excessiveness, but it still gives and satisfies each one with his needs.

This is best exemplified when Islam orders Muslims to pay charity or Zakaat ("poor due") and at the same time it cautions man against his human instinct of cherishing money to the point of getting enslaved to it.

Almighty Allaah Says (what means): "And (they are) those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, (justly) moderate." [Quran: 25:67]. "And let not your hand be tied (like a miser) to your neck nor stretch it forth to its utmost reach (like a spendthrift)". [Quran: 17:29] For instance, it is forbidden to follow one’s desire by eating prohibited things or having illegal sexual intercourse. On the other hand, it is also forbidden to torture oneself by barring this natural need by fulfilling them in an allowed manner. So moderation must be there all the time.

Three people came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and they asked about his daily program and worship. Upon hearing it, they thought his worship was not enough for them. One of them said, "I will never sleep at night (i.e. spend it solely in worshipping Allaah). The other one said: "I will never get married" (so that he can spend his life solely worshipping Allaah). The third one said: "I will never eat meat". (to deprive himself of the pleasure to be derived from it, perhaps that it would please Allaah).

When Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) heard them, he denied their deeds and said: "But I fast, break my fast, sleep and wake up (part of night for worshipping) and marry women - the one who refuses my Sunnah (recommended deeds) is not one of my followers."

Also, the jurisprudential ruling of Islam is practical. It has nothing impossible or hard to do because it is not abstract ideals but rather one that takes care of man’s desires needs and the reality of his life. In this respect, Islam nurtures moulds, guides and polishes man without necessarily forgetting and renouncing his earthly whims and caprices.

Almighty Allaah Says (what means): "And eat of what Allaah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allaah, in whom you are believers." [Quran: 5:88]. Also: "…Eat and drink but be not excessive…" [Quran: 7:31]. And: "O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allaah has made lawful to you and do not transgress…" [Quran: 5:87].

We all know that Islam is the truth, but until and unless we realize all its merits, coupled of course with God’s guidance and enlightenment, we will never be sure if we will always live with or die for it, considering the proliferation of various other religions around us.

Islam – A Comprehensive Way of Life

To understand the essence of Islam is to understand the very essence of humanity. More than a religion, Islam is a complete and comprehensive way of life leading to a balanced way of living. Islam brings civilization and happiness to man. Islamic principles and teachings can provide realistic, fair and objective solutions to the prevention of individual, familial, social and international problems which are threatening the existence of human communities throughout the world.

A spiritual belief that does not deal with social behavior, economic relations and international organizations is as erroneous as the social doctrine that does not consider spiritual belief, morality and behavior. Such social doctrines are abortive attempts, incapable of total human guidance or of achieving any coherence or accord among human beings.
Both the individual and the society are in dire need of a belief that accommodates and directs all their vital activities towards construction and growth. When the individual and society adopt such a belief and apply it to life, humanity can accomplish seemingly miraculous achievements which can only occur when man unites himself with the Eternal Power that channels his personality -potential in the right direction.
History has shown that Islam is unique in its ability to provide guidance for the entire range of human activity. It does not separate spiritual and secular life as unrelated entities.
Islam integrates all domains of human life, just like the different systems in the human body integrate to provide a complete human being. If one system does not work properly, it has got to affect the whole body. Likewise, Islam proposes systems of laws that integrate all parts of human society to bring happiness and peace to all its members. There is no other way or system that urges the active worship of Allaah in its general and most comprehensive sense other than Islam. Fox example, Islam teaches that Muslims should fast for a month every year (i.e. Ramadhaan) in order to acquire piety and self-discipline and to develop awareness of the needs and problems of others who are starving or are in desperate need of food. Such an awareness of the needs of others is not enough on its own. Therefore, Zakaah (obligatory charity) is prescribed to be distributed among the segments of society that are in need of individual and communal assistance.
 A very important universal concept in Islam is “Ummah” (Nation). Ummah transcends all limitations implied by the term ‘nation’ by encompassing all people regardless of race, color, or sex. Allaah emphasized this great Islamic principle in the verse (which means);
"Mankind was [of] one religion [before their deviation]; then Allaah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed. And none differed over it [i.e. Scripture] except those who were given it-after the clear proofs came to them-out of jealous animosity among themselves. And Allaah guided those who believed to the truth concerning that over which they had differed, by His permission. And Allaah guides whom He wills to a straight path." [Quran 2:2 13]

Moreover, Islam has a unique understanding for the concept of Ummah. Ummah is the field for knowledge, ethics, government and positivism. Ummah in Islam is a system in which people integrate, even if they belong to different belief systems. It is a system of universal justice and peace that accommodates everyone who believes in freedom of thinking and in calling people to the truth-whether they are individuals or communities.
Indeed, Ummah in Islam is an apparatus which is more advanced than that developed by the West, the UN., or those apparatuses established by the American-European block merely to bring about a “new world order,” but which in reality often are geared only to maintain Western control over Third World human and material resources.
The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) proposed a constitution for the city of Madeenah during the first days of his emigration from Makkah. He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) included the rights of both Jews and Christians, thereby safeguarding their freedom and beliefs. History has never known a constitution that represented minorities as this constitution of the Islamic state did. Ummah as an Islamic concept will, Allaah willing, bring the advent of universal peace as well as an internal social system. Ummah is the field-ground for civilization to take place. Such an Ummah can be integrated and united, if it derives its doctrines, constitutions, morals, values and the whole perspective of life from the same united source: belief in the only true Allaah. This is known as the concept of Tawheed (Monotheism).
The value systems of Western societies will continue to collapse, since they are built on shifting grounds. The Sunday Times of London, in its September 1994 issue, reported about a revolt by women against the values prevailing in Britain: ‘‘British women seek new morality in its religious affairs” correspondent Lesley Thomas stated.
According to the report, this is not the case of British women who are favoring Islam. “Thousands of British women are becoming Muslims in a trend that baffles feminists and causes concern to Christians.” The report continues that “of the estimated 10,000 British converts to Islam over the past decade, most are single, educated women, doctors, college lecturers and lawyers.” The educated in the west are beginning to see that the “full” life is found only in Islam, the universal religion.
And what about the present day Muslim world? Unfortunately, some “educated” Muslims now pay only “lip-service” to Islam. They think that Islam is a slogan to be raised or a word to be uttered. Islam is the way of life that should be implemented in all spheres of life. These hypocrites have forgottenthat Allaah dislikes those who brag about things that they do not practice. When man’s deeds are not commensurate with their words, their conduct is odious in the sight of Allaah.
"O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred in the sight of Allaah that you say what you do not do." [Quran 61:2-3]

May Allaah let the Muslim World never forget that Islam provides a complete and comprehensive way of life. Islam creates harmony in the mind, the soul and the body in a marvelous way. The need for Islam emerges from the humanity’s search for a constitution that provides guidance and satisfaction in all spheres of life. It is a code of life that is not limited to partial needs, but rather a way of life that penetrates all barriers to interact with people’s needs in this life and beyond. It is a way of life where there is no discrimination between what is sacred and what is secular.
Islam is unique among the religions and civilizations the world has known. In contrast to the other religions of the world, Islam defines religion itself as the very business of life, the very matter of space-time, the very process of history, and the gift of Allaah. Therefore, all these work together to constitute them.
Islam is a divine guidance wherein humans of all nations, colors and tongues feel linked to a Supreme Power and Justice. Its teachings are kept intact and authentic. It is the only way to happiness, dignity, and universal peace. Islam is so unique in its method for solving the problems of humanity. I can say with confidence that the twenty first century will be the century of Islam. The everlasting miracle of Islam, THE QURAN, is a standing challenge to the intellect of all peoples at all times. In Islam’s four abiding principles - equality, tolerance, promotion of science, and solution to the world’s problems - its universality asserts itself. It calls to all mankind, if only mankind will listen.
"Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from [any] other than Allaah, they would have found within it much contradiction." [Quran 4:2]

The Universality of Islam

In this century, where means of communication and transportation have gone beyond all expectations, cross-cultural awareness has become widespread. And with the collapse of communism and consequently the Soviet Union and many other communist countries, many proposals are presented urging the adoption of universal laws, values and morals to govern relationships among the peoples of the world.

Recently, the idea of a so-called “New World Order” was proposed through the United Nations in order to prescribe values and impose laws on people of various cultures. The question that will immediately emerge is ‘Whose values, laws and ways of life are they going to adopt?” Of course, the American way of life will become the only choice presented, because the United States is presently the only superpower among all the nations of the world, as well as the largest financial contributor to the United Nations. Given the natural richness and military power of the U.S., why have its values not provided happiness and peace of mind to the millions of Americans whose lives have been wrecked by alcoholism, violence, drug use and other family and social dilemmas? Can such a way of life that has failed to uproot discrimination against Afro-Americans and other minorities bring justice among the social castes of India? Can the American way of life that has resulted in grave failure when attempting to solve the problems of the homeless in America, provide solutions to the problems of poverty in South America or Africa?
Some sources might say the New World Order does not have to be that of the Americans; it could be that of the British, the French, the Russians or the Chinese. Are they not permanent members of the Security Council (the actual decision making body of the UN)? Nevertheless, these governments have brought neither happiness nor security to their own nations. No sensible person in the whole world would choose or suggest a way of life that is going to contradict with his won interests; countries are not an exception. So, any system of life that could be selected as the basis for a New World Order is prone to serve the interests of only the people who propose and sponsor it. Therefore, they have got to be unfair towards other nations.
To accept these New Order premises as a way of life means full submission to the teachings and the rules that such a system puts forward. What would result from such acceptance could be a materialistic and secular view of life. So, it would be neither fair nor complete, because of the incompleteness of man. The probability for the application and the acceptability of such a New World Order is extremely remote and the unproductive, exactly as it was with Old World Orders as Colonialism, Communism, Dark Ages Theology, and Capitalism.
Indeed there is a dire need among the majority of the world population that for a way of life that can solve their existence and destiny. With the escalating rate of immorality and violence in the world, people are restlessly searching for a way out. Many have found that suicide is the easiest and probably the fastest solution. No wonder, our world is living in a state of chaos. It has tried all forms of ideologies and applied so many socioeconomic theories, but none of them has proven to be right. That which has been tried has failed, and that which has failed has been tried again ... and again, is there not another way? Is there an alternative system that would work as a guide for the universe? These two questions make the theme of this research.

What is Islam?

The word "Islam" means submission and peace. Submission  is to the will of God and peace means to be at peace with yourself and your surroundings. A broader meaning of the word "Islam" is to achieve peace by submitting to the will of God.
This is a unique religion, with a name which signifies a moral attitude and a way of life. Judaism takes its name from the tribe of Juda, Christianity from Jesus Christ, Buddhism from Goutam Buddha and Hinduism from the Indus River. However, Muslims derive their identity from the message of Islam, rather than the person of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) , thus it is wrong to call them "Muhammadans”.

Who is Allaah?
Allaah means God. It is a personal name, which Allaah calls Himself in the Quran. That is where Muslims take this name . It can also be found in an Aramaic copy of the Bible, and even Christian Arabs say “Allaah” when referring to ‘God’.
 Who is a Muslim?
The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God. The first principle of Islam is known as the "Testimonies of Faith" and is as follows...
"I testify that none is worthy of being worshipped except Allaah (God) and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah"
In a broader sense, anyone who willingly submits to the will of God is a Muslim. Thus, all the Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, preceding the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) are considered Muslims. The Quran specifies about Ibraaheem (Abraham) may Allaah exalt his mention who lived long before Moosaa (Moses) and ‘Eesaa (Jesus), may Allaah exalt their mention, that (what means): "…he was not a Jew or a Christian but a Muslim." [Quran 3:67] because he had submitted to the will of God. Thus, there are Muslims who are not submitting at all to the will of God and there are Muslims who are doing their best to live an Islamic life. One cannot judge Islam by looking at those individuals who have a Muslim name, but in their actions they are not living or behaving as Muslims. Muslims are ordinary people like other humans; among them are the good and the bad. They are not infallible creatures and, therefore, make mistakes.
Who was Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )?
In brief, Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was born into a noble tribe of Makkah in Arabia in the year 570 CE. His ancestry goes back to Prophet Ismaa’eel (Ishmael) may Allaah exalt his mention son of Prophet Ibraaheem (Abraham) may Allaah exalt his mention. His father died before his birth and his mother died when he was six. He did not attend a formal school; initially, he was raised by a nurse as it was the custom those days, and then by his grandfather and uncle. As a young man, he was known as a righteous person. At the age of forty, he was given the prophethood, when the angel Gabriel appeared in the cave where Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )  used to meditate, and revealed the first verses of the Quran to him. Subsequently, the revelations came over a period of 23 years and were compiled in the form of a book called the Quran, which Muslims consider as the final and the last word of God. The Quran has been preserved, unchanged, in its original form.
Do Muslims worship Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )?
No. Muslims do not worship Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) or any other prophet(s), may Allaah exalt their mention. Muslims believe in all prophets including Aadam (Adam), Nooh (Noah), Ibraaheem (Abraham), Daawood (David), Sulaymaan (Solomon), Moosaa (Moses) and 'Eesaa (Jesus), may Allaah exalt their mention. Muslims believe that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was the last of the prophets. They believe that God Alone is to be worshipped, not human beings or idols etc.
What do Muslims think of Jesus may Allaah exalt his mention?
Muslims think highly of Jesus may Allaah exalt his mention and his worthy mother, Mary. The Qur’an tells us that Jesus was born of a miraculous birth without a father. He was given many miracles as a prophet. These include speaking soon after his birth in defense of his mother's piety. God's other gifts to him included healing the blind and the sick, reviving the dead, making a live bird out of clay and, most importantly, the Divine message he was carrying. These miracles were given to him by God to establish him as a prophet. According to the Quran, he was not crucified but was raised into Heaven (which means):
“And [for] their saying: “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain  Rather, Allaah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allaah Exalted in Might and Wise. ” [Quran 4: 157-158]
Who were Jesus' parents?
Jesus may Allaah exalt his mention is the son of the Virgin Mary, and he had no father. Allaah created Jesus. The Quran says (what means):
Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allaah is like that of Aadam. He created him from dust; then said to him: “Be” and he was.”[Quran 3:59]
Is Allaah the same as what Christians call The Father?
Allaah is the Creator Whom Jesus may Allaah exalt his mention worshipped. He is the Creator Who spoke to Moses may Allaah exalt his mention and split the sea for him and his followers. That is Allaah. But Allaah tells us about Himself (what means): "Say “He is Allaah, (Who is) One, Allaah the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent." [Quran 112:1-4]
Is there a Trinity in Islam?
No. Allaah is Perfect. The Quran Says (what means): “Allaah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of (all) existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth…”[Quran 2:255]
Do we believe that Allaah created the heavens and earth in 6 days?
Yes, but He did not rest on the seventh day, because He did not get tired. Allaah is Perfect. He does not get tired, nor does He sleep, feel pain, or die.
Can we see Allaah?
Allaah is not like the sun. Anyone can see the sun. Moreover, Allaah is the Most Beautiful. Nothing is as beautiful as Allaah. Actually looking at Allaah is the greatest pleasure of the people of Paradise. This pleasure is not granted by Allaah to anyone but the believers. So no one will see Allaah before he dies.

Does Allaah see us?
Allaah sees us and knows everything about us. He knows us better than we know ourselves. There is not a leaf on a tree that blows away, or stays in its place except that He knows it. There is not a dry spot or  wet spot, nor a grain in the depths of the earth except that Allaah knows it.
Do Muslims believe in the Hereafter?
God is Just and manifests His Justice, He established the system of accountability. Those who do good will be rewarded and those who do wrong will be punished accordingly. Thus, He created Heaven and Hell and there are admission criteria for both. Muslims believe that the present life is a temporary one. It is a test and if we pass the test, we will be given a life of permanent pleasure in the company of righteous people in Heaven.

FAQs about Islam - II

Where is Allaah?

Allaah is the Highest. He is High above all of His creation. He ascended above His Throne, which is immeasurably greater than the Heavens and the Earth. So much greater, that the Heavens and the Earth could fit in the footstool of the Throne, and they would be like a ring thrown into an open desert. Allaah is certainly the Greatest.

 Does Allaah look like us?
No. Allaah is Perfect. He is not like any of His creation. He has told us that He has Hands, Eyes, and Face. However, all of these attributes are befitting to His Might and Glory. A Muslim does not say a single thing about Allaah, other than what Allaah says about Himself. Allaah is Perfect and Unique.

What does it mean to believe in Allaah?
It means:
1- To believe in Allaah’s total Perfection and Uniqueness.
2- To believe in the Angels. We must love them all in the same way, we cannot hate an Angel; for example, it is forbidden to hate Michael who is given the charge of Rain and the vegetation of the Earth or Gabriel, who is entrusted with Revelation (i.e. he brings down the Scriptures to the prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention).
3- To believe in Allaah's books revealed to His Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, taking into consideration that all of these books have either disappeared or changed, except the last divine book, the Quran.
4- To believe in His Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, because they are His Messengers and He sent them. We cannot pick and choose, a Muslim must believe in all the Prophets of Allaah, may Allaah exalt their mention.
5- To believe in the Last Day: The Day of Judgment.
6- To believe in Allaah's predestination of good and bad (we might consider something bad from our perspective), but to Allaah everything He does is good).

When is the Day of Judgment?

Only Allaah knows.

Are there signs for the Day of Judgment?
There are plenty of signs, of which many have already occurred.
To name a few:
1- Objects will begin to talk.
2- Killing will be widespread.
3- The killer will not know why he was killing, and the person who was killed will not know why he was killed.
4- The Anti-Christ will come.
5- Prophet ‘Eesaa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary) may Allaah exalt his mention will return.
6- Gog and Magog will be set free.
7- The sun will rise from the West (after this, there can be no more repentance.)

Do Non-Muslims go to Heaven?
Allaah only accepts Islam because it is Allaah's true religion given to all His Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention. He Says in the Quran (what means): "Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted of him, and he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter". [Quran 3:85]

What about someone who has never heard of Islam?
Allaah is the Most Just, there is no one more Merciful than Allaah. Allaah said in the Quran (what means): “Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger." [Quran 17: 15]
Thus, if a person had never heard about Islam and was never warned clearly, Allaah would have a special test in the Hereafter for that person, equal to the chance that person would have had on earth.

How do we know Islam is the truth?
Islam is the only religion that:
1- Holds Allaah as One, Unique and Perfect.
2- Only Allaah is considered worthy of worship, not ‘Eesaa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention nor an idol, or an angel.
3- The Quran does not contain contradictions.
4- The Quran contains scientific facts, which are 1400 years ahead of their time. Even though it was revealed 1400 years ago, the Quran contains scientific facts which are only being discovered now. Scientific facts coincide with the Quran perfectly, and are not at variance with it.
5- Allaah challenges the world to produce the like of the Quran, while confirming that they will never be able to do so.
6- Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was considered the most influential man in History. A non-Muslim wrote a book called “The 100” about the most influential men in history, and Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was ranked first. Prophet ‘Eesaa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention was placed third. Note that even Prophet ‘Eesaa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention was a prophet sent by Allaah. Would Allaah allow a false prophet to be so successful? No. Even the Bible says this in Deuteronomy 18:19: “A false prophet must die.” Yet, Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did not die until he had completely conveyed his Message and taught Allaah's religion.
7- Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had predicted many future events, and all of his prophecies have come true or are still coming true.
8- Most importantly: Allaah created humankind and we know that we should only worship Him. This is an instinct that is ingrained in all human beings. Allaah did not just leave us to our own resources, rather He sent Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, in all ages and for all nations.. These Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, were granted miracles as proof. The miracle for today’s age is the Quran. In this age there is no religion, except Islam, that worships only Allaah and believes in Him as being totally Perfect, and believes in all of His Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, and all the Scriptures.

Can anyone become a Muslim?
Yes, anyone can. There are two declarations, which are necessary:
1-To bear witness that no one deserves to be worshiped except Allaah.
2- To bear witness that Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is the Messenger of Allaah.
This is the declaration of faith which makes a person Muslim, however, this should be said in Arabic.

After this, what’s next?
After a person becomes a Muslim he/she is taught about Prayers, Fasting, the Poor due, Pilgrimage. These are the pillars of Islam.

 Then what?
Muslims are brothers. A Muslim should love for his brother what he loves for himself. Allaah's wealth does not run out and Allaah can provide for us all. We pray for each other and love each other, and love for our brothers and sisters what we love for ourselves.
